The simple reason Oklahoma softball's catcher wears blue tape during WCWS games

As one of college softball’s most formidable programs, Oklahoma has had ample time to refine its tactics in pursuit of another national title. This year’s Women’s College World Series is the perfect stage to showcase their strategies.

The Sooners often take the field with a burgundy spirit. But their love isn’t confined to one color. When star catcher Kinzie Hansen takes her position behind home plate, she wears not just her usual gear but also a noticeable blue tape on her chest plate.

Hansen’s choice often draws curious looks. Is it for style or substance? An homage to the Smurfs or a nod to Blue Man Group? Social media buzzes with speculation.

However, the reason for Hansen’s azure accessory is straightforward and effective.

Oklahoma Softball Catcher Blue Tape

Oklahoma’s decision to adorn its catcher equipment with blue tape is rooted in a simple desire: to win more games. Period.

The Sooners adopted this tactic in 2023, influenced by star pitcher Jordy Bahl. The then-sophomore sought better visibility of her target. Hence, OU’s catchers began covering their chest protectors in blue tape whenever she pitched.

The impact was immediate. Before the tape, Bahl’s record was 4-1 with a 2.66 ERA, giving up 14 walks in 29 innings.

After the tape was introduced, Bahl’s performance soared. She went 17-0 with a 0.52 ERA, allowing only two home runs and 22 walks during that period.

Oklahoma coach Patty Gasso explained the tape’s purpose: “I think the blue is just something to lock her eyes on. It’s nothing philosophical. It’s just a different color than the chest protector.”

The synergy between OU’s battery led the Sooners to their seventh national championship. Bahl played a crucial role, delivering an 11-strikeout masterpiece against Stanford in the title game.

Although Bahl transferred to Nebraska to be closer to home, her legacy remains a vital part of Oklahoma’s success. The blue tape, a simple yet powerful tool, continues to symbolize their quest for excellence.
